The main objective of SMM is to help a company to enhance their brand exposure online and extend customer reach. It is a marketing technique that focuses on gaining traffic or attention of clients to your website through social media sites including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube and many more.

There are many tools you can learn and use,  but this is not the  main SMM challenge. As I understand it, the true objective of social marketing is giving people something to talk about, and becoming the subject people talk about. It is hard to organize a network to begin with. Once you have a network, you need to challenge people constantly to make them interested. This is damn hard unless you can leverage communication channels of others. And once you succeed, it takes some hard work to keep the information flow.

Brand management

Having a vision is not enough. A good brand is not something you should build on your own. You will want to organize and maintain a team of great professionals. Each of them will have a different opinion of what is right for you, and you will need a viable vision to guide them.

Then you will probably want to find partners to affiliate with.  This means a lot of communication with others, listening very carefully for what these people want to achieve, and becoming a key piece of the puzzle in your industry.  If you do not like Skype talks in weird hours with weird people, you are in a disadvantage.
